Wedding Money Tree

Saptakee Sengupta
A wedding money tree is essentially set up in marriage ceremonies to mark the status of both the bride's and groom's families. It also ushers happiness and fortune in the destiny of the newly-married couple.
While in some religions, the presence of a money tree is considered as demeaning etiquette, in other traditions, it symbolizes prosperity, status, or just another convenient option for presenting gifts in the form of cash. According to Chinese mythology, a money tree is sacred and symbolizes good luck, fortune, and affluence.
However, there is no compulsion that guests have to put up a token on the tree to display a sense of gratitude. Today, the concept of money tree has changed and it has become a less controversial issue with people accepting it as a means to have a little fun at weddings by decorating the tree with dollar bills.
Personalizing a money tree requires a little preparation. After all, it will be the centerpiece that would garner the attention of all invitees. It is important to understand that though a money tree is not associated with proper wedding etiquette, it is a symbol of your gratitude towards the couple.
You can use a natural fresh houseplant or purchase an artificial tree for the purpose. The good luck money tree is actually a bonsai tree whose presence is valued at a wedding ceremony.

Arranging the Tree

If you have purchased an artificial tree, then you need to first assemble it. Form a proper shape by arranging the leaves on the branches. Once you are done with the framework, you can proceed with the decorations.
Among the few varieties of houseplants that could be used as a wedding money tree are money plants, dragon tree, Swiss ivy, lucky bamboo, umbrella plant, etc. The fresh look of these trees is appealing, and they also suit the occasion.

Potting the Tree

Using hanging planters is not advised. So you can pot the tree in beautiful containers. The choice of pots depends on the decoration you are going to opt for the tree. For example, if you have picked a colorful theme for decking the tree, then choosing a similar hue for the pot would be a good idea. Baked clay pots and wrought iron pots look classy and simple. Lucky bamboos and money plants complement those types.

Adding Decorations

If the theme is based purely on money, then embellish the tree with vintage coins and notes. You can attach the coins on the leaves with tapes and hang the bills from the branches with satin ribbons. Trees embellished with an array of copper, bronze, silver, and gold coins look stunning. Leave enough spaces for your guests to shower money on the tree.
Money theme could also be blended with candies, fortune cookies, flowers, stars, bells, etc. You can decorate the pot by incorporating shells, pebbles and rare rocks on the top of the soil. The soil in the pot could be concealed by adding an artificial layer of moss or grass bed on top.
Once all the decorations are done, you can light up the tree with stringed lights. Now that would lend an entirely new and different look for the tree. Colorful LED bulbs, when hung on wedding money trees, enhance the look of the decorated tree. This way you can improvise the concept and implement your own ideas.
